A small hen. A Scottish spirit.

The story behind the name: The Hidden Spirit

The brand book looks back to tales of illicit distilling in 17th-century Scotland. In one account, bottles were hidden beneath nesting hens to keep them out of sight of tax collectors. A protective hen, reluctant to move from her nest, became the inspiration for the name.

This is the brand’s historical storytelling: a sense of curiosity and discovery carried into a contemporary Scotch whisky.

Three ideas. One spirit.

The three values at the heart of the official brand book.

HERITAGE

Our roots are in Scotland’s history and whisky culture. That heritage runs through the name, the label and the story of each expression.

AVANT-GARDE

Respect for tradition sits alongside curiosity: exploring casks, flavours and new possibilities rather than standing still.

INCLUSIVITY

From a neat pour to a cocktail, an approachable spirit makes room for adults to discover their own preferences.

A discovery among the casks

The Broody Hen is Summerhall Distillery’s Scotch whisky brand. Its UK introduction traces a connection from the search for oak-aged-gin casks to an encounter with whisky. The brand’s ‘hidden spirit’ imagery brings casks and anticipation into the story.

Five casks, and a memorable name

The official account describes five stacked casks that suggested a hen coop, a moment also introduced on the Korean website. The cask-head lettering and the little hen on the label connect this story visually.

Follow the photographs, learn the name, then discover which expression interests you. There is more than one way into the world of The Broody Hen.

The people behind Summerhall

Matt Gammell and Marcus Pickering established Summerhall Distillery in 2013. The official archive shows the hands-on work that turned an existing space into a distillery.

Stills and workshop photographs introduce the team and its surroundings; they do not imply that every whisky used in The Broody Hen was distilled on this equipment.

The Flock · A community of discovery

The brand calls its community of enthusiasts and supporters The Flock. At its heart is an open-minded approach to discovery, with room for different tastes rather than a single prescribed way.

It is a conversation about the stories behind whisky, the possibilities of a cask and the character of each expression.
